Puerto Galera is the oldest settlement in Oriental Mindoro.

The name Puerto Galera was taken after the galleons that used the bay as a port of call for refilling and repairs. It used to be an important stopover for vessels of the the Manila-Acapulco Galleon Trade during the 18th Century.

The island caves and coves, sparkling white sand beaches and underwater coral gardens make the town the number one tourist destination in the province.
